An Unplugged Family Fun Night

It shouldn’t really come as much surprise to me that my 10 year old daughter can’t really do anything simply.  If I ask her to help with dinner, we suddenly have a 5 course meal with hand-written menus.  If I bring her along shopping, it suddenly turns into a mass back-to-school shopping expedition where she gets more than I do.  And if I tell her we’re going to have some friends over for an unplugged night of outdoor fun, it suddenly turns into a NEED to redecorate her playhouse!

Since this was an unplugged night, (and I didn’t really feel like running extension cords even if it wasn’t!), we ran to Home Depot and grabbed some solar LED landscaping lights.  I’d been meaning to get her lights for her playhouse for quite awhile now and we LOVED the look of these!  They’re charming and cottagey-looking, and since they’re solar-powered, I don’t have to worry about her wasting power or electricity (HUGE issue with a certain little 10 year old!).  They went together in minutes and we just pushed them right into the grass.

We made up a cute little wreath for her door, grabbed a stool from another part of the house for a little bit of color and added a plant that we found inside too.

The glowstick garland was her idea and I love how it turned out!  We used glowsticks that had little holes on one end and threaded them through a piece of white string.  If I was any good at all at taking pictures in the dark, I could show you how cool it looked, but, well… yeah, let’s just look at it in the light!

Her friends loved it and the playhouse served as a good home-base for them when they were playing at night.  The little lanterns and the glow stick garland were just bright enough for them to see their way around without being glaringly bright.  Of course, it just looks cute too which is the ultimate pass/fail test for a 10 year old!

Continuing with our unplugged night of fun, the kids all played with sparklers:

While the adults enjoyed what was hands-down the best popsicle I have ever had!

I’m not even sure it’s fair to call these things popsicles!  I had the peach basil balsamic and did not want it to end.  The popsicles are made by Pop Couture, a Baltimore based Ice Pop company that makes 100% natural, frozen treats from products sourced locally.  There is no dairy or nut products and the flavors are all natural.  And ridiculously awesome!  They use fresh fruits, veggies and herbs from local farmers and wholesalers to come up with their unique flavors, that are the perfect summer treat when you don’t want to heat up your stove or oven for a party snack! And the packaging is just too cool!

After our successful, unplugged night, we headed down to my in-law’s beach house for some more outdoor fun!  The landscaping lights we bought for the playhouse, came in a pack of 4, so we took along the other two and put them out back by the water.

They blended perfectly and give off such a subtle, soft light in the evening when the boats are coming in!
