The Hershey Gardens in Hershey, PA is a gorgeous place to visit while you’re in Central PA! With a butterfly atrium, children’s garden, rose gardens and more, it’s a fun, interactive experience for the whole family!
With Hersheypark, Chocolate World, Hershey resorts, concerts and more, there is no shortage of things to do in Hershey, PA! But one of the lesser known attractions is quickly becoming one of my favorites… the Hershey Gardens!
Situated on top of a hill, it’s got a stunning view of Hersheypark and downtown Hershey. It actually takes me a few minutes to enter the building because I’m too busy taking in the view when I first arrive!
But plan on spending about 2-3 hours at the Hershey Gardens because there’s so much to see and do!
Butterfly Atrium at the Hershey Gardens
The Butterfly Atrium is located inside the main building at the Hershey Gardens and mimics a tropical plant environment. Which means it’s the perfect environment for butterflies from all over the world!
When you step inside, you’re greeted immediately by butterflies swarming all around you! Be careful where you walk because they like to land on the ground, and sometimes on you as well! There are lush trees and plants, a water feature and plenty of exhibits that explain and display the lifespan of a butterfly!
Hershey is one of only 25 indoor, tropical butterfly gardens in the entire country so it’s worth a stop when you’re in town!
Pro tip: The Butterfly Atrium is handicap accessible however you cannot bring strollers inside. Strollers are permitted elsewhere at Hershey Gardens, but not inside the butterfly house.
Hershey Rose Gardens
Once you step outside the back door of the main building, you are the beginning of 23 acres of breathtaking roses, other flowers, trees and exhibits. Milton Hershey requested his workers to “create a nice garden of roses” and it has been a bright spot in the town for more than 80 years now.
There are more than 3500 roses in the historical section of the garden including award-winning varieties.
It really is spectacular even for someone like me who isn’t really a “plant person”! I walk around just exclaiming and wishing I had worn a flowy, summery dress so I could get some photos!
The gardens are split into all kinds of themed areas including the Japanese Garden, a seasonal display garden, perennial garden, herb garden and many more!
Our personal favorite, though, is the Children’s Garden!
Children’s Garden at the Hershey Gardens
The Children’s Garden at the Hershey Gardens is so whimsical and fun for all ages!
There are 32 themed areas of the Children’s Garden that are filled with hands-on activities, Hershey chocolate shaped seats and sculptures, interactive music stations and more!
The Children’s Garden is also home to the Hoop House where kids can learn about gardening, honey bees and what plants are safe for pets. When we visited, there was even a fun scavenger hunt in the garden to keep the kids interested and entertained.
Hershey Gardens Special Events
The Hershey Gardens calendar of events is filled with regularly scheduled activities and some that are seasonal or only held for one day. Most of them are included with your membership or ticket admission, though, so it’s worth it to take a look at the calendar and see if there are any coming up as you plan your visit!
On Sundays and Saturdays, there’s a recurring Bugologist Cart where guests can touch or even hold bugs and learn all about insects and what makes them special.
On Mondays, you want to head to the Children’s Garden for Marvelous Mondays. There are kids’ crafts, story time, entertainment and more. The best part is that it changes every week so you can come back repeatedly for a new adventure each time!
There are guided garden walks on certain days, special performances, specials run during certain months and so much more! Be sure to check out the Calendar of Events for more information.
Pro Tip: there are some events that do require a special ticket and are not included with your regular admission. Be sure to read the details on the event calendar.
Ticket Prices, Membership and Other Tips!
Hershey Gardens Tickets
There’s a whole sliding scale for ticket prices based on age, but the basic ticket price is $13.50 (ages 13-61). You can find out the rest of the price breakdown HERE, but that gives you a general idea of what it costs.
You also could buy a combo ticket for the Hershey Gardens and the Hershey Story’s Museum Experience. The basic cost for that combo ticket is $22 for both attractions. And I really do recommend both, because we LOVE the Hershey Story! It’s also a great activity to do on a rainy day since it’s all indoors.
Here’s the best deal, though, stay at one of Hershey’s Resorts and you get admission to both attractions for free! Crazy, right?!
If you stay at the Hershey Lodge or Hotel Hershey, when you check in you will receive tickets for everyone in your group to both attractions! Let’s just base this savings off of my family of 4… this is a $108 savings for us! More than worth it to stay at one of their properties (especially when you factor in the free shuttles and other amenities, but that’s for another post…).
Hershey Gardens Membership
For only $50 per person or $115 per family, the cost of a membership pays itself off in just a few visits! There are other membership options beyond those two, though, so be sure to take a look at their options HERE.
Your Hershey Gardens Membership gets you free admission to the butterfly atrium and gardens, discount in the gift shop, annual membership reception, discount on select programs and more. Well worth it if you live in the general Central PA vicinity!
This will be the shortest paragraph ever… it’s FREE!
Follow the road signs for the Hershey Gardens and it will take you directly to the adjacent parking lot which is completely free!
