How to Make a Homemade Band T-Shirt

How to make a homemade band t-shirt with Cricut. Create iron on song lyrics with a free cut file and iron-on transfer!

My teenager daughter is at the age where I don’t think it’s possible for her to have enough band t-shirts. She loves them and she wants them all!

Unfortunately, my wallet disagrees with her! But since I love her taste in music, I didn’t want to flat out tell her no. There are a lot worse things teenage girls could be wearing then Beatles song lyrics t-shirts, right?!

So we turned to my trusty Cricut and pulled out some iron-on for this quick and easy project. It took us maybe 10 minutes total and it should be even faster for you, since I already have the design file sized and ready to go for you!

Supplies to Make DIY Band T-shirt

I used my Cricut Explore Air 2 for this project, but you could easily use a Maker if that’s the machine you have. If you need an intro on how to use your Cricut, be sure to check out my Cricut 101 post.

My daughter is wearing an adult size medium t-shirt in the pictures. If you need to resize the words for a different size shirt, just click on “customize” and adjust the size there. If the size works for you, you can click “Make It” in Design Space and immediately begin cutting out your design.

How to Make a Homemade Band T-Shirt

Begin by opening up the song lyric file in Design Space. Click on “Make It” and then follow the steps to send it to your Cricut.

Make sure you have “mirror” turned on so your words will be facing the correct way in the final cut. Be sure your material dial on your Cricut is set to “iron-on vinyl”. Load your vinyl onto your mat and then load into your machine and begin cutting.

After your design is finished  cutting, weed out all the excess vinyl around your letters. Then place on your shirt where you would like the design to be.

I press my iron directly on the shiny film over the letters. If you have a Cricut Easy Press then I’m jealous of you, and you should just follow the directions that come with it.

I press the iron on for about 30 seconds and then test it. If the film peels right off and all edges of your letters are secured, then you’re good to go. If anything lifts up even a little bit at all, then press it down for longer until it releases easily.

And that’s it! That’s how incredibly easy this project is! We just love how we can customize our shirts with our favorite song lyrics or quotes, and it’s not the same generic ones you’ll see everyone else wearing! Plus it’s so inexpensive to make your own shirts!

In fact, I teamed up with some of my favorite bloggers to share all the different ways you can make custom t-shirts with Cricut! Isn’t it crazy how many possibilities there are?? And you could easily do these designs on canvas bags, home decor and more!

That heathered grey is the perfect color to make these concert Ts. I love the idea of using song lyrics, too. Like the others have said, I can easily think of at least 10 right off the bat I'd love to make. Such a great idea!
