Indoor Hopscotch

Sharing is caring!

This Indoor Hopscotch takes me many years back to the days when my kids were toddlers! My goodness, how I miss those days!

At the time, though, some days were more about survival than they were savoring the moment. Especially the long winter months and the weeks in spring when it seemed like the rain would never end.

One day, in desperation for something new for them to do that would hold their attention for longer than 5 minutes, I made this indoor Hopscotch out of some carpet tiles that I had in my storage room.

This takes no time at all and is ridiculously inexpensive considering how many years of enjoyment my kids have gotten out of these! Seriously, I’m not joking when I say that we’ve had these carpet tiles for a decade now.

Let that sink in for a minute.

I took about 10 minutes and turned $10 into 10 years of play time for my kids!!

I ran to the carpet store (I personally can always find these at Carpet Mart), and grabbed a few new ones for the sake of this post, so that I could show you a few step by steps. 10 years later, these carpet tiles are still only about a buck each!

My advice to you… do NOT be a perfectionist about this! These are being made for the sole purpose of your kids to jump on them and horse around. There is no need for stencils or overthinking of any kind. Pour some paint on a disposable plate, freehand your numbers and be done.

I personally use DecoArt acrylic paint on mine. I just think the colors are brighter and these have held up so well over the years! While our carpet squares got plenty of use in our basement and other indoor spots, they also got plenty of outdoor use as well. My kids would take these out in the grass too since they were a bit clumsy and didn’t always want to play on a rough driveway. They’ve been left out in the rain and used as cushions when my kids were drawing with chalk. They STILL held up through all of that!

We use a beanbag rather than a rock (yanno, that whole indoor thing). Other than that, there’s nothing left to do except have fun!

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, you can even add polka dots or other designs! Take 10 or 15 minutes, whip up an indoor hopscotch for your kids and then sit back and watch them enjoy!

I LOVE this idea, especially for those snowy, rainy days. My kids would love making the tiles. Can't wait to try this!
