Welp, I’ve decided to write a post that has nothing whatsoever to do with painting or baking. There will be no decorating or gluing today. No cooking or marinating. Just me hanging out and sharing!
I’ve gotten some emails recently asking about the different ways I monetize my blog and asking for help in getting other blogs off the ground. Luckily, I’ve got some pretty awesome readers and haven’t gotten any negative feedback for the ads on the sidebar or any of the sponsored posts. I know not everyone is a fan of them, so I appreciate that everybody has just let me do my thing! And because you’re all so stinkin’ awesome, I thought I owed you a little explanation as to why you’ve been seeing more of them!
And, of course, since it’s me you’re dealing with… there will be plenty of rambling.
Let’s start off with a little girl and her dreams. See, when I was younger (and by younger I mean nearly all of my childhood through my teen years), I would daydream about growing up and being a stay-at-home mom. I wasn’t interested in wearing suits and the only thought I gave to potential careers, was how it would fit around a family life and let me be home with my kids. But the thing is, I’m also pretty ambitious and like keeping myself busy. I have a strong desire to be productive and contribute to the family finances… except I’m not terribly good with a daily, rigid schedule. And this is how most things go in my life… I’m pretty darn out-going, but have it in my head that I would be a great hermit. I go to a meeting assuring my husband I won’t take on any extra responsibilities and come home chairing 54 committees and running for an office. I want to have a job and the satisfaction that comes with it, but I want to be a stay-at-home mom more than nearly anything in life. I’m a walking contradiction and for whatever reason it works for me.
Which really does bring me back to the topic of this post.
When I started this blog, it truly was with the intent to just share what I was already doing. I didn’t plan on doing projects just because I thought they would be popular or do well with SEO (honestly, I don’t even know if I’m phrasing that right! ha!). I was going to just continue living life and doing the things that we normally do as a family, but take the time to photograph them and write it down.
I have always had it in the back of my head, that my ultimate goal was to write
a cookbook and the blog would, hopefully, get me closer to that goal.
But in the 15 months since I started this blog, I’ve realized that I truly do love it
and it has the potential to help me live out my childhood dreams! I can make
this my job (albeit, very part-time job!) and still be a stay-at-home mom.
So, yes… there have been more ads and sponsored posts recently. Some, I have very deliberately placed on the blog and am fully aware of. Others, I honestly don’t know how they get there or how to get rid of them!! I really do stink at this whole technical side of things! For the last couple months, there were ads showing up in between my posts and I thought they were just the most obtrusive, annoying things. Yes, they were making me some money, but I finally figured out how to get rid of them and I think the page looks much more clean and stream-lined now. I’m only saying this to let you know that I do still plan on trying to keep the page clutter-free and am not just putting every single ad I can find up! I’ve been pretty choosy and will continue to do so.
I was reading a post on a different blog recently that was on the same topic and the blogger got an (anonymous) mean comment saying they didn’t come to that blog to just see ads and they wanted to know what the blogger needed all that extra money for!! What the what?? The blogger very kindly replied that she was paying her mortgage with it. Seriously, would anybody ever go to your local florist and say, “I come in for the beautiful flowers so it annoys me that you make money while you create works of art and I demand to know what you spend your paycheck on”? Of course not! Well, I hope not! I see it the same way with bloggers. This has become a job for some (not for me yet, but goals, people! Goals!). Yes, it’s a bit different than leaving your house and reporting to a boss for work, but that doesn’t mean we put in any less hours or are less deserving of being compensated for that time. Because it’s a buttload of time. I enjoy it (except for the blasted HTML part!) and love it and hope to continue with it. I’m thankful for everyone who has been so supportive of me and hope we can continue to support all bloggers who choose to monetize their blogs.
When we’re hanging out with our girlfriends and talking about career changes and plans, I’m sure we’re all super supportive! “You know what you want to do and have goals and passions and dreams?!! Then go for it, girlfriend! Dream big and don’t let anybody stop you!”
I’m sure we’d all say some version of that to our friends in real life, so let’s say
it to each other too! Let’s be thrilled that there’s someone out there who has found
a job she’s good at and is being compensated for it! And I’ll do my best to keep the regular
posts flowing, so the other ones aren’t so noticeable! Pinky promise and virtual high-5’s!
I’ll be back soon with the specific ways I’ve been able to make a little extra money by blogging!
