I woke up to this pretty little view every morning for the last week. Not too shabby, eh? So calm and quiet. My husband and I would take our drinks out here most nights after the kids were in bed and just talk, look at the stars, listen to the water rippling and sometimes just sit in silence. It was much needed after the year we’ve had.
You know what else was much needed? A vacation without any hiccups. See, we’ve got this habit of turning into the Griswald’s when we’re on vacation. You know, of National Lampoon fame. Sometimes I read other peoples’ posts or updates about all of the “catastrophes” that have happened to them on vacation, and I just chuckle. Honestly, forgetting your wallet at the hotel is not a catastrophe. Breaking a flip flop on the beach should not ruin a day. I can tell you about vacation catastrophes!
I suppose it’s to be expected that things will go wrong, when you vacation with 20 or so family members and most of them are whackadoodle. This was the year her favorite souvenirs were her skull scarf headband and clip-on shades. Apparently, she’s got a bit of goth geek in her.
There aren’t many pictures to photograph our worst vacation EVER because I think most of us wanted to forget it before it had even officially started. My extended family and I decided to try something different that year and head to the Poconos. We stopped at a wild animal park/zoo before we even got to the house. Somewhere there is a picture of my daughter on my husband’s shoulders with a giraffe almost right beside them. Would have been a great shot, except she spiked a high fever on the drive there and was all flushed, sweaty and couldn’t keep her eyes open. But the giraffe looked cool.
And that was the beginning of the vacation that included spider bites with ER visits, about 6 of us getting this dreaded virus/fever, a windshield getting blown out on the freeway, my daughter almost drowning, a near accident when an 18-wheeler blew a tire and a vacation house that looked NOTHING like the pictures online. There was more to that week, but we need to just move on and forget it. Please.
Two years ago, the 4 of us took a fantastic vacation that I’m hoping we can do again some day! We spent 2 nights at my sister’s in VA, 2 nights in D.C., 3 nights in Williamsburg and then 5 nights in Ocean City, MD. It was fantastic. A bit hot, but still great. This picture was in a tent in Jamestown, right about the time my daughter collapsed and exclaimed, “What is the matter with these soldiers?? Didn’t they believe in air conditioning or something??”.
She’s never one to hold back when she’s got something to say. She really should learn to loosen up a little bit. This pic is so typical of my two. Emma in total pose mode while Stevie tries to enjoy the scene and stay calm.
Don’t let his calm exterior fool you, though. He’s a goofball through and through. I could sit all day and look at pictures of old vacations. He’s always up to something in the background. Cross my heart, I have a whole series of pictures from a trip to D.C. where he’s posing like this and I had no clue until we got back home and I looked at them!
And do not fear, every vacation includes at least one meal where somebody hits The Food Wall. It’s normally the boy.
You know what, though? Even our vacation disasters are still filled with so many good memories that it’s almost worth it. Almost… the Poconos one was still a disaster in my eyes! Remind me some time to tell you about the time we thought my dad died in the van on the way to Disney. That was a good time…
Where have you guys headed this summer? It’s winding down for us over here, but we’ve got Disney to look forward to in September and I’ll have lots of tutorials leading up to it with all things Disney!!
